KLM Cargo offloads freighter fleet to Martinair

KLM Cargo is to cease operating its own freighters within the next few weeks, handing over operational control to sister airline Martinair.

The airline said the crisis affecting air freight carriers had accelerated a review of operations that began when Martinair became part of KLM last year.

The move will see KLM’s two remaining B747-400ERF’s transferred to Martinair next month, and follows the switch of two freighters to Martinair earlier this year.

Michael Wisbrun, executive VP KLM Cargo, said the structure of Martinair Cargo enabled the freighters to be deployed more flexibly, something that had become vital in the current turbulent market.
