Kenya Airways recorded a 13.5 percent rise in passenger volumes in the first quarter of 2011 buoyed by new African routes and an increase in flight frequencies on popular domestic routes.

The airline, which is 26 percent owned by France-KLM, said passenger numbers rose to 791,302 in the three months, its fiscal fourth quarter.

Apart from increasing frequencies on its existing destinations, Kenya Airways started flights to Rome, Muscat, Juba, Luanda, Nampula and Malindi in the course of last year.

The amount of cargo carried during the period was up 5.2 percent at 14,326 tonnes, thanks to its focus on high dense cargo and a recovery in the perishable goods sector.

The airline's chief executive said last year it aimed to carry 3 million passengers and 60,000 tonnes of cargo in the year to end-March.
